Because,normally RBC is isotonic to plasma,so that contents don't leak out from it,nor enter to it,because contents in RBC lie in an osmotic equilibrium with contents of plasma.

But,when plasma gets hypertonic,it shrinks as fluid comes out from it,and vice versa when plasma gets hypotonic,and RBC's swell up.
