Thickness and equivalent rain precipitation

Explanation:

Snowfall can be measures in two ways:

  1. As thickness of the snow cover (in cm or inches)
  2. As equivalent rain after melting the snow in a measured container.

Depending on the snow conditions its equivalent as rain will vary. As example fifty inches very dry snow are equivalent to just one inch of rain but to have the same equivalent as rain two inches of sleet are enough.

Some charts are available for a quick calculation of the equivalent rain based on the environmental temperature and on the thickness of the fallen snow.
