Life expectancy is the average age at which people die. So, if there is a high infant/child mortality rate, the life expectancy would be shorter.

Explanation:

Centuries ago, infant mortality would be extremely high, and not many children would survive birth and childhood. This would lead to the life expectancy to be shorter (on average, people would die younger), as many infant habitants were dying.

Now, if the child mortality is low, life expectancy will be average or higher, as habitants live for a longer time.
