Many people accept a theory known as the Big Bang, which essentially says that all energy and all matter existed as a singularity in the universe that then exploded and sent every bit of energy and matter hurling into space. Since that's only a theory, not everyone buys it - and it also gets into some religious connotations.

Then, according to the 2nd part of Newton's 1st Law, an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force - so once this matter & energy got hurled into the vastness of the universe, everything just kept going....and maybe will keep going - depending upon if there is an edge to the universe or not.
