the latent heat of vaporization is the amount of heat energy required to convert a given amount of liquid into a gas (and vice versa). During Condensation, this heat must be released to the environment in order to convert the gas into a liquid.

Fun fact, as weather systems climb mountains, the change in conditions and resulting precipitation releases heat energy the air mass, which as it descends down the other side results in the warm, dry air we experience in the prairies coming off the Rocky Mountains.
