Let= # of pillars

Let j= # of jars

Eight candles in a basket : #t+p+j=8#

#t=(j+p)#
Substitute
#(j+p)+p+j=8#
#2j+2p=8#

There are no part-candles, so the only possible answer is #j=2, p=2, t=4#
