A train rolls to a stop along a horizontal track without the conductor applying the brakes. What is the reason this happens?

Friction causes the train to eventually stop.

Explanation:

A train has a large mass and therefore momentum is large. Friction (the bearings of the axles, air drag, rolling resistance, are 3 examples) is also large.

I hope this helps,
