An object with a mass of #3 kg# is hanging from a spring with a constant of #8 (kg)/s^2#. If the spring is stretched by #6 m#, what is the net force on the object?
My answer is zero.
This question can be interpreted in different ways. I do not find the first answer to have interpreted it in the intended way. To me, the most likely interpretation is that the mass was hanging freely from the spring and then the mass was pulled down an additional 6 m by an additional force.
If my interpretation is correct, the net force should be 0 N. When it has been pulled down that 6 m and steady at that position, everything would be in equilibrium. That would mean its acceleration is zero and the net force on it is 0 N.
I hope this helps,
