What topics are you looking at? There are thousands of historical fiction books. Can you narrow it down to what topic you want to learn about (e.g., Ancient Egypt, Roman times, etc.) and what your reading level is (middle school, high school, college+).

It seems almost a contradiction in terms to me.

There are certainly some beautiful works of fiction set in pa##st times, but it seems to me that such a work can be good at being historical or good at being fiction, but cannot be both at the same time.

Setting a fictional story in a historical context can easily corrupt the public perception of that time and so be a bad thing. Worse still, the closer the fictional account is to being historically accurate, the more likely it is to distort the understanding of true history. For example, imaginative interpolations between known facts can end up being thought to be actual occurrences.
