American Armed Forces personnel

The number of Americans that died can be fair accurately determined since they were members of the U.S. military. Close to 25% of the KIA were African American.

The controversy is in the civilian deaths since numbers vary widely (1.3 to 3.8 million). Matthew White reports a South East Asia region total of 4.2 million.

Wide scale bombing (including jettisoning loads) and the use of scatter mines makes the numbers difficult to count. Mines are still killing people in the area. The U.S. has recently announced significant financial support for de-mining efforts in Laos.
