The blanks on the periodic table are because of the order that electrons fill the energy levels.

Explanation:

The first 2 electrons fill the first orbital, the second orbital holds 8 more electrons for a total of 10 electrons. The third orbital can hold up to 18 electrons however, after 8 are placed in that orbital, 2 must be placed in the fourth orbital, then continue filling the third .
