Epidermis is present on a basement membrane and divided in layers. The base layer is highly proliferative.

Five layers of epidermis are: (from inside to outside)

  1. Stratum basale/Stratum germinativum
  2. Stratum spinosum
  3. Stratum granulosum
  4. Stratum lucidum
  5. Stratum corneum

Cell division occurs in the first layer and cells are continuously displaced from base to more superficial location.

Please note that when cells reach the last layer, they are dead.
