I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban By Malala Yousafzai

Explanation:

I highly recommend I am Malala because of the strong themes presented throughout the book; woman's rights, the power of education, and Islam and its interpretations.

Read the graphic novels titled Persepolis (there are two books), by Marjane Satrapi, or the short story The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst.

Explanation:

Persepolis books 1 and 2 are about a young girl's life during the Iranian revolution and convey very strong messages of freedom vs confinement. They are both very good novels, but some topics discussed in the second book may be too mature for some readers. The Scarlet Ibis is a bittersweet story that talks about a young boy and his little brother, and how he wants to teach his brother how to walk despite his medical condition. This short story displays a strong theme of pride, which is evident throughout the text.
