Photosynthesis is the primary process by which solar energy is trapped by plants and used to convert water and carbon dioxide to form complex sugars.

Explanation:

Photosynthesis is the reason why we have life in its myriad forms on Earth.
Green plants also called autotrophs trap light energy from the Sun and use it to convert water and carbondioxide available in the Earth's atmosphere, into complex sugars. These sugars or carbohydrates are made in excess of the plants own requirements. They are available to plant eating animals .
These animals are in turn consumed by animals that feed on plant eaters.Animals are also called heterotrophs.
In this way energy from the Sun is transferred along the food chain and life as we know it is sustained on Earth.
The chemical equation that sums up photosynthesis is:

6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy = C6H12O6 + 6O2.
Additionally the oxygen given off as part of the process is used by plants and animals to carry out respiration.
