the deadliest hurricane on record was in Galveston in the past.

Explanation:

Sever weather like hurricanes are caused by differences in temperature. When a cold front meets a warm front.

Presently the world is a trend of gently increasing temperatures. This could result in fewer deadly hurricanes, as their is less difference between warm weather areas and cold weather areas.

There is some recent data from NASA that indicates that the number of force 4 and 5 hurricanes have increases slightly in the last 10 years. This could be a result of global warming.

The other reason that the deadliest hurricanes occurred in the past is preparation and warnings. Galveston for example put in a sea wall to prevent the flooding from a major hurricane. Weather satitltes can now track hurricanes and prepare people for the hurricane before it reaches land. These preventative measure protect lives and make even major hurricanes less deadly.
