Do living things have to live on the surface of a planet or moon? Where else on a planet or moon could scientists look for evidence of life?

One place that is especially popular is on subterranean sea floors.

Explanation:

We already have seen such life ... on Earth. Life exists on our ocean floors at hydrothermal vents, far removed from where sunlight can penetrate (http://noc.ac.uk/science-technology/life-oceans/life-sea-floor). This leads astronomers to believe that similar life is possible on (or in) some outer-planet moons like Jupiter's moon Europa (http://www.space.com/26905-jupiter-moon-europa-alien-life.html).
