Adverbs describe hoe a verb is performed. That is, adverbs modify verbs in the same way adjectives modify nouns.

This sentence could also be written as:

The plane landed.

However, it is possible that we add some description of how the plane landed, as follows:

The plane slowly landed.

Since slowly describes how the plane landed, it is an adverb.

A good rule of thumb for noticing adverbs is that they almost always end in the letter pattern "-ly".
