They bunch into chromosomes

So basically in Prophase, the DNA in a nucleus will begin to clump together into chromosomes. This occurs since the nucleic acids bunch up around proteins called histones. The DNA wraps up around these and then the histones kinda curl up together to make the X shaped chromosomes
