If you are referring to the world as a whole, almost no one got sick, only a portion of a region. Within that region though it was because of the fast action of the first responders to isolate the disease. So they could treat the infected population without it spreading. Ebola is not an airborne virus meaning that one must be in close proximity to an infected patient to receive the virus. So even those in the same village would not be at risk if all those infected were isolated.
