During the Time of Troubles in Russia, why was there much confusion?

There was no clear hereditary heir. The Romanov Family ended up on top.

Boris Godunov was Regent then Tsar just before the Time of the Troubles but was unable to create a Dynasty.
His son only ruled a few months. He was killed. Boris Godunov was regent after the death of Ivan the Terrible. Boris was not a relation of Ivan.
There was no less than 5 people named or took the name "Dmitri" the heir of Ivan, that over the time tried to claim the throne (or were represented by others in their name).

I'm not going to even try to explain this. This does it better.
