Ethan won a basket of Easter eggs in a raffle. He gave one-third to his family, half of the remainder to his friends, kept six eggs for himself and gave the other two eggs to his neighbours. How many eggs were originally in the basket?

I don't understand how to solve this question.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Eggs

Explanation:

Let me use E for the initial number of eggs.

His family gets #E/3# eggs. The remainder is #(2E)/3#.

His friends get half of the remainder. It is #(2E)/6#

It means that the final part (he keep for himself (6) and give to his neighbours (2)) is #(2E)/6 = 8#.

Now you can solve it:

#(2E)/6=8#

#2E = 48#

#E=48/2#

#E=24#

Check:
His family gets 8 eggs, To his friends: 8 eggs were given. The other 8 eggs are for Ethan and his neighbours...Total 24 eggs.
