I think this is question about refraction, the change in angle resulting from a change in velocity.

Explanation:

The lawnmower changes direction (pulling into the grass area) because it moves more slowly on the grass.

The same effect is observed for solids when a stone is thrown into water, as it slows down it changes direction towards the normal (an imaginary line drawn at #90^@# to the interface.

The same effect is more often observed with waves when they enter a denser medium and go slower.
