Because green plants are capable of fixing atmospheric carbon, and converting it to simple sugars.

So two questions:

#(i)# What is the process of carbon fixation called?

#(ii)# In what form is the atmospheric carbon?

Note that farmers and gardeners regularly add organic matter to their soils to improve drainage etc and to condition the soil.
