Count the number of:

Smaller squares: there are $8$

Bigger squares: there are 4 rows of 4, and the 2 made up of the smaller squares: there are $18$

Squares of side $2 \times 2$: 3 rows of 3: there are $9$

Squares of side $3 \times 3$: 2 rows of 2: there are $4$

Squares of side $4 \times 4$: there is $1$ big square.

Total number of squares: $8 + 18 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 40$

Consider this figure .

Here side of largest square has 4 equal divisons to make each smallest squares.

The number of total squares is $= {1}^{2} + {2}^{2} + {3}^{2} + {4}^{2} = 30$

And similarly for above figure total number of squares is ${1}^{2} + {2}^{2} = 5$

So following this rule we can say that the given figure should have total number of squares $= 30 + 5 + 5 = 40$
