The lack of empirical evidence.

Explanation:

The closed Big Bang Theories have the advantage of being consistent with the prevailing scientific philosophies. The philosophy that has dominated science since the French Enlightenment is that of naturalism or material realism. The closed Big Bang theories with the concept of alternating Big Bangs and Big Crushes makes it possible to believe in a universe where matter and energy are eternal and self existent.

The open Big Bang theories have the advantage of being consistent with empirical scientific observations. The Second Law of Thermodynamics is consistent with the open Big Bang Theories that the expansion will continue until heat death occurs. The observable amount of matter in the universe is not sufficient to result in a Big Crush, hence the postulations of immense amounts of dark,( unobservable) matter. Most telling are the three supernova studies of 1997. These studies provided empirical evidence that the rate of the expansion of the universe is speeding up, not slowing down as required by a closed Big Bang Theory.

The present empirical evidence supports the open Big Bang theories. The philosophical evidence for the Closed Big Bang theories is in conflict with the empirical evidence.
