"Returns" is an ambiguous word in this sentence. Does the author mean better grades? Or does he/she mean better salaries? Or does he/she mean something else? It's unclear.

The second phrase after the "and" refers to good graduates. This is an awkward construction. It would be better worded " Not only do good graduates... but they also command..."
