How about an easy to find a link to basic equation formatting? Perhaps when someone clicks " Ask a question" -- like we get when we click "Answer".

It needn't be a link to the same page we get when answering (that might intimidate students).
Explanation:
I think it would help if the question dialog box had a link to something like "Basic equation writing"
I think it should have help on
roots other than square roots,
how to format fractions and exponents correctly, Including important uses of grouping
sub- and super- script formatting -- for exponents and limits of integration and chemistry (and others)
I think that it would be best to keep it simple and link to the full help page for those who need more.
Second Suggestion
I also think it would be helpful if there was a preview of the question, so that students could see how it will look and edit before posting.
