The pH and pOH of a substance will always total 14.

Explanation:

pH means "power of hydrogen" and is a measure of the hydrogen ion concentration.

If the concentration of #H^+# ions is #10^-1#, the pH is 1, and the pOH is 13.

#10^-1 = 0.1#

#10^-13 = "0.000 000 000 0001"#

The #H^+# concentration is much higher than the #OH^-# concentration, which makes the substance acidic.
