Reducing the need of using cars, by means of an efficient and reliable public transportation system, you could reduce emissions.


In most cities cars not only produce incredible traffic jams but are the source of pollution by emitting dangerous gasses.
Introducing a good public transportation system could reduce the number of cars circulating and also allow to control more reliably the emissions (and possibly reduce them by introducing efficient engines and/or electric propulsion) of the circulating busses, trains, cabs, etc.

An interesting example is the city of Curitiba in Brazil designed and built with the idea of maximizing the efficiency of public transportation:
