How can the mechanical advantage of a lever be increased?

You would adjust the relative placement of the load, fulcrum, and the force.

Explanation:

I will discuss only class 1 and class 2 levers because the best you can get from a class 3 lever is a mechanical advantage of 1.

Class 1 Levers:

  • Moving the fulcrum closer to the load will increase the mechanical advantage.
  • Moving the effort farther from the fulcrum will increase the mechanical advantage. This may require a longer lever.

Class 2 Levers:

  • Moving the load closer to the fulcrum will increase the mechanical advantage.
  • Moving the effort farther from the fulcrum will increase the mechanical advantage. This may require a longer lever.

I hope this helps,
