If the position of the stone is such that it is close to the opening of the ureter, it can block urine flow from that kidney.

Explanation:

Kidney stones can form anywhere in the kidney, and while many of them pass out naturally, some require treatment.

When the stone becomes large and moves till it is almost at the start of the ureter (which drains the kidney into the bladder), a urine flow blockage can occur.

Since this can cause severe pain as well as infection or kidney damage, surgery is an option if the stone cannot be treated by lithotripsy.
