How could farmers improve land that has been polluted by acid rain?

Add basic substances that will neutralize the acid. This is called sweeting the soil.

Explanation:

Acid rain puts extra hydrogen ions in the soil lowering the pH of the Soil. Acid like vinegar, lemon juice, and sulfuric acid are sour.

Bases neutralize the acid raising the pH and removing the sour conditions of the soil. Bases have #OH^-# ions that combine with the #H^+# ions of the acid to create water #H_2O#

So if the soil has been polluted by acid rain add bases like Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Hydroxide and ammonium Hydroxide.
