During the Napoleonic Wars, the king of Portugal retreated from Europe and left to live in Brazil. At this point, the Brazilians felt better about life because they were treated much better (they basically lived in the capital of Portugal now). However, when the king left Brazil after the wars were over, the Brazilians would become unhappy again. The king appointed PEDRO II to rule Brazil.

Pedro later grants Brazil independence after the king goes back to Portugal, and he then rules Brazil.
