The Cold War in the Middle East was very complex. On the one hand, there was Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the Emirates on the side of the US. On the other hand, there was Syria and Afghanistan as part of the Soviet blocks. This was essential in order for the Cold War to persevere; each side had its own allies. Everybody chose sides, during the Cold War. Egypt and Syria were Soviet allies, while Turkey, Israel, and Iran were US allies. When Russia invaded Afghanistan, the US aided the mujaheddin.
