He became President when Nixon resigned.

Explanation:

Ford had replaced Spiro Agnew as Vice President as he had resigned over tax evasion. Nixon then became embroiled over the Watergate scandal, and despite repeated attempts to cling on to power, he finally had to resign, but immediately received a full pardon from Ford. Ford was subsequently defeated in the 1976 Presidential election by Jimmy Carter.
