Imperialism often goes through cultural hegemony so as to fulfll its agenda. Scholars such as Edward Said and Gramsci have based their works mostly on this trend of Imperialism. Languages such as French, Spanish or English have become world languages thanks to imperialism.

Indigenous people were affected by cultural uprooting and it was one of the major arguments to protest imperialism though not the only one.
