They were portrayed very negatively

Explanation:

The purpose of the yellow press was very precisely "war propaganda", the escalation had to be justified. It was what Noam Chomsky would lated the "manufacturing of consent". Spaniards were portrayed as savages. People such as Pulitzer or Hearst did a wonderful job in promoting the war.
