Impeachment was probably inevitable. Whether the trial in the Senate would have resulted in anything is anyone's guess but impeachment would have finished any ability to govern by Nixon. He had been fighting to cover up the Watergate break in for many months and he knew he couldn't regain the trust to govern to any extent that he could live with.

Nixon was a career politician and he knew when it was time to leave. Interestingly Gerald Ford became President as House Majority Leader a recent change in succession order. Vice President Agnew has pleaded guilty to a felony and resigned.
