Did the actions help Japan? Questionable. The Commodore sailed his ships into the harbour and demanded Japan open itself up to trade with the US. They eventually agreed and so began industrialised Japan, leading to the modern Japan we know today. On the downside the Japanese were exposed to many diseases. The traditional faith was eroded as western monks moved to the country to 'convert' the savages!

The Tokugawa shogunate as the ones signing the agreement eventually fell as they were then seen as weak. This allowed the formation of a centralised government with the Emperor as its figure head. Japan would have eventually moved to open trade lanes. Did it need to be forced?
