The Cherokee nation appealed to the United States Supreme Court.

Explanation:

The Cherokee nation was a sophisticated political entity. Rather than starting a war with the US army the Cherokee use legal means to fight their removal.

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Cherokee Nation, they legally should have been able to retain ownership of their lands.
Sadly President Andrew Jackson refused to obey the legal orders of the Supreme Court and evicted the Cherokee nation by force.
