The North U.S. felt that everyone was equal; thusfore, no slaves were allowed.

Explanation:

The South was pro-slaves because they needed the labor to run farms. It would take much too long and way to much work for other people to do it (notice the sarcasm).

The North, however, was anti-slavery. They didn't need the labor that the South did because their economy was more based on industries and factories. They were anti-slaves and felt that everyone was equal and that slavery should be illegal.
