They moved towards avoiding a repeat of such a crisis.

Explanation:

A number of measures were taken. A Hot Line was established whereby the White House and the Kremlin could contact each other directly.

There were also a series of Treaties designed to reduce the threat of nuclear war. These included the Non-Proliferation Treaty designed to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and the Test Ban Treaty banning nuclear testing in the atmosphere. Later on there were the SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks) treaties in the 70's.
