The US tried to prevent any communist or leftleaning government to reach power in the Cold War. The Allende government in 1973 in Chile was overthrown thanks to the interference of the CIA. It was replaced by Pinochet who was economically liberal and proAmerican.

Another example is the Contras in Nicaragua which were backed by the CIA and fought against the Sandinistas. Che Guevara was famously captured and tortured to death by the CIA to prevent the spread of communism.

The overthrow of Battista in Cuba in 1959 is what sparked a fear of communism in Latin American especially after the missile crisis in 1962.
