It is supposedly said (according to the Sagas of Erik the Red), that after he was exiled to Iceland, he went on to discover Greenland. Afterwards, his son, Leif Erikson, was the one to accidentally stumble upon Vinland(Newfoundland), where he established several settlements(like Leifsbúðir or Leif's Booths).

For the record, L'Anse aux Meadows is Leif's Booths, it is supposedly a ship repair station.
