They had opposite ideologies: the USA favored capitalism whereas the Soviet Union supported communism.


During WWII, the USA and the Soviet Union freed Europe from the joke of Nazi Germany. The immediate consequence of the end of WWII was the start of a new conflict opposing the Soviet Union and the USA-The Cold War.

Western Europe was occupied by American troops whereas Eastern Europe was under Soviet hegemony(except Greece). The two great superpowers aimed at world supremacy.
