Heart valves have flaps of tissue that allow blood flow in one direction only.

Explanation:

The attached images will demonstrate how heart valves open and close.

The valves in the heart and leading from the heart are as follows:
1. Tricuspid valve: Between the left atrium and the left ventricle.
2. Mitral valve: Between the right atrium and the right ventricle.
3. Pulmonary valve: Between the left ventricle and the pulmonary trunk artery.
4. Aortic valve: Between the right ventricle and the aorta.

All these valves have flaps of tissue that open in the direction of blood flow; if blood flow is reversed, the flaps of tissue come together to shut the valve and prevent the blood from flowing back.
