# How do you add sqrt128 + sqrt50?

Apr 3, 2015

In general you can not add roots of different values unless the can be simplified to a common value.

In this case, we are in luck:
$\sqrt{128} + \sqrt{50}$

$= \sqrt{8 \cdot 8 \cdot 2} + \sqrt{5 \cdot 5 \cdot 2}$

$= 8 \sqrt{2} + 5 \sqrt{2}$

$= 13 \sqrt{2}$
