Change both terms to fractions with same denominator and add algebraically

Explanation:

# -5 = -10/2#

# - 10/2 - (-1/2) = - 9/2 = - 4 1/2 #

A subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive.

Think of it this way taking something away negative.
But taking away a negative ( something bad) is good (positive)

If you are on restriction no video games because of bad behavior this feels bad. (negative)
If your mom takes away the restriction because of good behavior this feels good. (positive)

So subtracting a negative is the same as adding.
