# How do you express 9.01 times 10^-2 in standard form?

May 22, 2017

The negative index of $10$ indicates that you are dividing by 10, twice:

$9.01 \times {10}^{-} 2 = 9.01 \div 10 \div 10$

$= 0.0901$

OR

You can write this as a fraction:

$9.01 \times {10}^{-} 2 = 9.01 \times \frac{1}{10} ^ 2 = 9.01 \times \frac{1}{100}$

$= 0.0901$

OR

You can simply apply the rule which says move the decimal point to the left by $2$ places.

$9.01 \times {10}^{-} 2 = 0.0901$
