There are two terms. Simplify them separately and then add at the end.

Square first and then add.

#5+4^2#

#=5+16#

#=21#

This is different from #(5+4)^2# which would be done by adding first and then squaring:

#(5+4)^2#

#=(9)^2 = 81#
